About this tool

What does the site do?

Teaching Union Match is a free comparison tool for school staff in the United Kingdom. It helps teachers, school leaders, teaching assistants and other school-based workers compare the teaching unions and alternative professional support organisations available to them — and choose the option that best fits their role, nation and priorities.

Users answer a short set of questions about their role (classroom teacher, school leader, support staff), the UK nation they work in (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland), and what they want from a union or support service — collective strength, individual protection, professional development, affordability, apolitical focus, and more. The site then ranks every relevant organisation by how well it matches those priorities.

Organisations compared

The comparison covers the major UK teaching unions and alternative support providers, including the NEU, NASUWT, NAHT, ASCL, Community, EDAPT, UNISON, GMB, EIS, SSTA, UNITE, AHDS, SLS, NASUWT Scotland, UCAC, NASUWT Cymru, INTO, UTU, NAHT Northern Ireland and NASUWT Northern Ireland.

How it stays fair

No organisation pays to be listed. There are no affiliate links — the site earns nothing if a user joins any organisation. Every organisation is rated on the same set of values using public information, and the ranking engine treats every option equally. The quiz runs entirely in the browser, uses no sign-up, captures no personal data, and does not track users across sites. The site was created by the team at Edapt, one of the options listed — see the About page for how Edapt is rated on the same framework as every other organisation. Full methodology is published on the How it works page.

Who it's for

The tool is designed for anyone working in a UK school who is deciding which teaching union to join, considering switching unions, or weighing a union against an alternative professional support service such as Edapt. It's also used by trainee teachers, early career teachers, newly promoted middle and senior leaders, and school support staff. It's free to use.

Our mission

To help teachers and school staff make informed decisions about unions and other professional support — so they can choose backing that fits their needs, values and priorities.

We believe that when school staff feel properly supported and protected, they are more likely to remain in the profession. By making it easier to compare options clearly and objectively, we hope to help more people find the support they trust and want behind them.

01

A clearer picture

All the options — unions, professional associations and alternatives — shown side by side.

02

Your values first

We start from what matters to you, not from what any organisation wants to promote.

How it works

Three short steps. About two minutes.

01

Tell us about your role.

A few simple questions — the nation you work in, your role in school and how long you've been there.

02

Tell us what matters to you.

Workplace support, values, cost, the kind of representation you'd want. No right answers — your priorities shape the match.

03

Compare your options.

See every organisation you can join, ranked by fit, with plain-English strengths, trade-offs and indicative costs — and a link straight to their joining page.

Who we cover

Every option, across the four UK nations.

Every union and alternative support organisation we know of that serves school staff in the UK. If we've missed one that school staff can join, tell us.

Every organisation is listed on equal terms. Ranking is generated live from your answers. No organisation has paid to appear here.
Common questions

“Is this really objective?”

Yes. We explain exactly how the ranking is generated, and every organisation is listed on the same footing. You can see the full methodology — and every other question we get asked — on the next page.
